Puffing Billy Spirit of the Dandenongs
by Nick Anchen Third Edition – published June 2017
by Sierr Publishing
This third edition book of 108 pages brings up to date the story of the living museum that is the Puffing Billy Railway in Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges, east of the City.
Victorian Railways operated the narrow-gauge railway from Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook for 53 years and finally, the line was closed in 1954 after it became blocked by a landslide.
Public outcry was such that the railway was restored to operational status by volunteers of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society in 1962 and now operates every day of the year except Christmasa Day having carried over 1 million of local, interstate and international visitors through the hills.
