LETTE – The Railway that Never Opened
Ian and Sophia Dodd
published by the Authors 2018
This self-published book provides a fascinating insight into this, almost mythical, line. It draws on the researches of numerous Victorian railway historians who have taken on the challenge of tracing the route of this ill-fated railway which involved significant infrastructure works to cross the Murray River and its associated flood plains.
Arising from The Border Railways Act of 1922; the line eventually opened in 1932 and, although services were either suspended or run as required, it was not until 1983 that the line was formally closed by an amendment to the 1922 Act in the Victorian Parliament.
The Authors attribute to the New South Wales Government much of failure to support the project by failing to ensure that adequate water supplies to farms to support agriculture, in semi-desert country.
All of this is played-out against the background of 1930s Great Depression and various, ill-fated schemes to settle English migrants, and ex-servicemen on the land and a local movement, for the Riverina to secede from New South Wales.
The book is profusely illustrated with many contemporary images, plans and diagrams from a wide range of sources, showing the construction works, and the significant number of remnants of the line, that can be found in tracing the route of the railway.
This publication fills a significant gap in the railway history of the region and is “a must” for all who are interested in the history of Victoria’s railways
