Picnics at The Falls

A History of the Lal Lal Racecourse and its Railway

by

Mark Cauchi and Michael Guiney

published by the Authors in May 2018

The New Year’s Day races at the Lal Lal Falls Racecourse was for many years one of the most popular holiday events in the colony of Victoria.  The picturesque waterfalls nearby was the natural attraction and the race meeting, at its peak in the late 1880s. drew in excess of 30,000 holiday-makers to this scenic and remote location.

The small village of Lal Lal is situated approximately ten kilometres South-East of Ballarat and a branch railway was constructed from Lal Lal station on the Geelong to Ballarat railway to the racecourse – a distance just under two miles (3km).

Built as part of the Railway construction Act of 1884, the branch line that served this location was said to be the most profitable in the colony of  Victoria.

This book is the second in a series of new railway histories from Mark Cauchi and Michael Guiney combining serious railway research and relevant social an local history.  It is a superbly written, definitive history of the Lal Lal Falls, the Racecourse and its branch line railway.

The book, of 87 pages is perfect-bound in laminated illustrated card covers. The size of the book is A4.

The Bungaree Racecourse Railway tells of how an Irish Catholic community overcame staunch Government opposition to obtain a railway to their local racecourse.

It was a major political achievement making the story of the railway a significant part of the history of horse racing at Bungaree, which spanned almost 100 years.

The book is bound in illustrated glossy card cover with 40 pages printed on high quality paper.
